Transport in Oxford
Local buses around Oxford are popular with students and residents. For those visiting the town centre, a popular park and ride service helps you to avoid the city centre traffic. But, like many university towns, the preferred method of transport is cycling - and the roads are equipped to deal with this, with separate cycling lanes on the main routes in and out of town.
The city’s connections to the rest of the country are excellent. Oxford railway station is centrally located and a train from there can get you to London in around an hour and Bristol in an hour and a half.
Living in Oxford
Oxford is a beautiful small city, and it attracts a large number of tourists for this reason too - many of whom describe it as being like something out of a film. Many students decide to stay in the city after graduation, and because of this, a strong jobs market has evolved here, especially in the science, engineering and technology fields. In fact, Oxford is regarded by some as being the UK’s equivalent to Silicon Valley.
Jericho is close to the city centre and is one of Oxford’s hippest neighbourhoods. Jam-packed with independent shops and cosy cafes, it has a lively atmosphere, topped off with rows and rows of painted multi-coloured houses. For families, Cowley Road is a diverse neighbourhood with a cinema and plenty of street art. In the summer, the Cowley Road Carnival is a brilliant street party for all the family.
