Buying in Bolton
Ten miles north-west of Manchester lies the town of Bolton. This former mill town is now home to an array of commerce, including shopping centres, retail parks, manufacturing and communications. According to a survey published by the British Science Association in 2003, the people of Bolton are some of the friendliest in Britain.
Within its standpoint at the foot of the West Pennine Moors, Bolton boasts an array of interesting landmarks, such as the colloquially named Hall I’ th’ Wood (now a museum), the Great Hall at Smithills, and the neoclassical Grade II-listed town hall.

Transport in Bolton
New and improved transport links into Manchester mean that Bolton has recently been put on the map as a great commuter town. It’s a place where property prices are much cheaper than inner-city Manchester and you’ll get the sense of community that comes along with living in a small town.
Train routes into Manchester run three times an hour, and last around 20 minutes. From there, you can travel anywhere in the country from Manchester Piccadilly or Manchester Victoria. Alternatively, you can drive into the city in 30 minutes on the M61 onto the M60, or take a bus in around an hour.
There are currently plans underway to extend the Manchester-Bury Metrolink through to Bolton, which would make public transport options even more comprehensive.
Living in Bolton
It would be unfair to rate Bolton simply on its proximity to Manchester. As a standalone town, there are many reasons why Bolton can be a fantastic choice. North Bolton’s rolling hills and moorland are attractive to affluent buyers in Horwich, Edgerton and Harwood. Schools in the area are good too - with a wealth of both independent and state schools with great reputations. Most recently, The Olive School (primary) and Rumworth School (secondary for those with special educational needs) have both been rated ‘outstanding’, whilst Thornleigh Salesian College (secondary and sixth form) has been rated ‘good’.
Similarly, the suburbs of Heaton, Halliwell and Chorley are within the A58 and so have fantastic transport links for commuters out of the town. In these areas, semi-detached post-war homes are the most popular. Most are on family-friendly estates with good local pubs and a nice sense of community.
